It was the first X-Men series I followed, and I had no problems following the story. The only background knowledge I had of the characters previously was from the movies and cartoon series.
Good to know for that anon, and I was pretty sure familiarity from the movies and cartoons would be enough. Some other runs might be more difficult to just jump into because they deal with lots of previous events and whatnot, but I think that one could act as a perfect jumping on point.
