Ryley’s Pull List 3/14/12 - Marvel Comics

  • Captain America #9 - Things aren’t looking so great for Cap… I mean, he’s got new and old villains attacking him, he’s losing his strength, and things generally aren’t going his way. But that just means a fun story for the readers! Right?
  • Fantastic Four #604 - For the past three years Jonathan Hickman’s been weaving together an incredible and intricate tale for the Fantastic Four, and in this issue it all comes to a conclusion. Even though he’s still staying on the book (as well as on FF) until October of this year. Anyway, this issue is sure to be a big one and a great one as we’re going to see the conclusion of everything Hickman’s been building up. What exactly is the endgame he’s been working towards, and what effect will it have on the Fantastic Four and their extended family?
  • The Incredible Hulk #6 - The battle between Hulk and Banner heats up as Banner’s throwing everything he’s got at the Hulk. Plus, he’s got some gadgets of his own so he can go head to head with the green goliath himself. I’m just curious as to what the big conclusion happening next issue will be and what kind of effect it will bring on the Hulk.
  • Journey into Mystery #635 - Gillen continues his Sandman-esque arc, the Terrorisom Myth, as Loki and Daimon Hellstrom are to stop Nightmare and the rest of the Lords of Fear from using their so said Ultimate Weapon. Knowing this book, it’s sure to be a great issue no matter what it’s dealing with.
  • Punisher #9 - According to the solicit, a lots happening in this issue. Tanks destroying New York, secret histories of Frank’s partner, and the caskets of the Castle family being dug up. Jeez. Frank never gets it easy, does he? Well, at least he has a cool beard now (as seen on the cover of issue #8, but not here… poo)
  • Wolverine and the X-Men #7 - Wolverine and Quentin Quire continue their mission to get money to fund the Jean Grey school, and meanwhile the rest of the students and faculty are dealing with this strange Brood invasion taking place within and without Kitty Pryde herself. Plus, Broo the mutant Brood is seemingly the focus of this invasion, but he’s not going without a fight. If all of that isn’t enough to make you read this series then I don’t know what else to say except that it’s been simply fantastic every issue.

Ryley’s Pull List 2/1/12 - Marvel Comics

  • Amazing Spider-Man #689 - Part two of the current two part arc, whose name I can’t remember.
  • Punisher #8 - Punisher has one eye and he’s about to kick some asses. Not much to say but it’s going to be awesome as hell.
  • Uncanny X-Force #21 - Part two of Otherworld/The Trial of Fantomex
  • Uncanny X-Men #6 - Part two of Tabula Rasa
  • Venom #13 - Here begins the month long Venom event! We’ve been leading up to the events of this story through the first year of Venom, and now we’re here! All month long we’ll be getting issues of Venom tying into this event in which he has to team up with Red Hulk, X-23, and Ghost Rider to take down an enemy that’s too much for them to defeat one on one. Plus, it’s likely to tie into why Flash gets a place on Secret Avengers, and also what’s up with him having to acquire the Toxin symbiote in the last issue.
  • Winter Soldier #1 - Also a huge release this week, the start of Bucky’s new solo title! After Fear Itself lead readers to believe Bucky was dead, an aftermath issue showed us that he’s actually still kicking, and that he’s now working once again as Winter Soldier, a secret agent that only few know even exists. If you, like me, loved Bucky’s run as Cap then you need to grab this series as Brubaker and Guice are sure to work the same magic once again.

RYLEY’S PULL LIST 1/4/2012 - MARVEL COMICS

  • THE PUNISHER #7 - This issue should be a good jumping on point for anyone who hasn’t done so yet. Rucka’s been writing a great Punisher thus far, and in this issue we’ll see some action between Frank and the Daredevil.
  • THUNDERBOLTS #168 - Thunderbolts turns focus to Luke Cage back at The Raft while the team is still floating around in time. Should be a nice point for new readers to jump on, and it should also be a fun issue being that Parker writes a really nice Luke Cage.
  • UNCANNY X-FORCE #19.1 - Another good point for new readers to jump on, this issue acts as an interlude to UXF and also as a prelude for the upcoming Age of Apocalypse series. Being that it’s by Remender, it should also be great for continuing readers.
  • UNCANNY X-MEN #4 - Once again, a good place for new readers to jump on. Kieron Gillen starts up a new story here as the X-Men fight against Phalanx. X-Fans shouldn’t miss out on this new series, and jumping on now is a great idea while it’s still young.

Just to spite me, all of a sudden I find that Marvel has an early solicit for the future release of a Punisher Omnibus collecting everything by Rick Remender. Pictured above are the four collected editions (Dark Reign, Dead End, Franken-Castle, and In The Blood) that hold the material within the upcoming omnibus.

Rick Remender’s Punisher mega-arc is collected into one oversized volume! Frank Castle has dedicated his life to hunting down and killing evil men. So when Norman Osborn becomes the head of US security, the Punisher sets about taking Osborn down. But when his assassination attempt fails, Frank finds himself in Osborn’s crosshairs. The Hood resurrects several longdead super villains and sends them against Frank … but it is the twisted son of Wolverine who manages to kill the Punisher. With his remains stitched back together, the Punisher is reborn as the terrifying Franken-Castle!

COLLECTING: PUNISHER 1-16, ANNUAL 1; DARK REIGN: THE LIST - PUNISHER; FRANKEN-CASTLE 17-21; DARK WOLVERINE 88-89; PUNISHER: IN THE BLOOD 1-5

According to Amazon, the book is due out mid-July of next year. There’s also a Secret Warriors Omnibus due out around the same time that has all 28 issues of that series, plus the Dark Reign: The List one-shot and the Siege one-shot as well as a couple of Mighty Avengers issues.

Thanks for screwing with me, Marvel, and releasing a Punisher Omnibus of the stuff I just started collecting >=[

CURRENTLY READING - PUNISHER: DEAD END
I’ve read Frankencastle twice through, but actually never picked up Remenders two prior stories, so now I’m basically going backwards and reading his second book after his third…
I’m half through and so far it’s pretty good stuff, but mostly humorous “I’m Punisher and I’m just going to kill the crap out of all of you” stuff. Story premise: D-List villains from the past are raised by the Hood to take out Frank Castle, and now he’s fighting through them all. Plus there’s an Annual attached to the book that has Punisher and Spider-Man do stuff together, and that should be fun.
Tan Eng Huat, who did much of Jason Aaron’s Ghost Rider, is responsible for the main stories art, and he actually does better than what I’ve seen of him before, so it’s actually not a bad book to look at. Jason Pearson does the annual, so that should be even more fun with him in there. Pearson FTW.

So if you know me (meaning if you’ve been following me for a long enough time to figure this out) then you know I have a very guilty pleasure of Marvel’s omnibus collections. Why? They collect awesome runs in a single book for a comparatively low price (than if you were to buy all the material collected in the omnibus separately), and they are giant and pretty.
So christmas is fast approaching, and whilst my wallet is on the thinner side right now (figuratively, given my money is in the bank) I do tend to get gift money around the holiday. You know what else happens around the holiday? Trip to New York. You know what’s in New York? Awesome comic shops (not to speak down on my own, but it’s fun to visit foreign lands). You know what COULD BE in said comic shops? OUT OF PRINT OMNIBI!
That said, and what you’ve probably guessed already given the attached photo to this post, I’m going to be looking for the above Punisher Omnibus. This one collects a good deal of Garth Ennis’ Punisher run (about 40 issues worth), which is a run I’ve been longing to stick my toes into. If I can track this one down in a store where I’ll get it for the $100 cover price instead of the inflated online prices, then I’m going to snatch it up like a nickel whore snatches the herp. (she should use protection)
